E140ii
E140(ii) is a food additive approved by the European Union (EU). It is used as a synthetic colouring agents in food and drink products.
The two forms E140(i) and E140(ii) are referred to as chlorophylls and chlorophyllins, respectively.
E140(i) and E140(ii) give a dark green colour and occur naturally (for photosynthesis) in all plants. E140(i) and E140(ii) can be used in cosmetics and medicine as well as in food products. When used for commercial purposes, the chlorophylls and chlorophyllins tend to be extracted from plants such as alfalfa, grass and nettles. These colourings are soluble in water, though their intensity may fade with time.
We did not find reference to any adverse effects due to use of E140(ii).
