Proctology
Proctology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders that affect the rectum and anus (i.e. diseases and disorders of the rectum, and diseases and disorders of the anus).
Associated Terms:
- A medical specialist in the field of proctology is called a proctologist.
- One of the adjectives used to refer to proctology is proctological, but more specific terms may also be used, e.g. "anal" and "rectal".
- A proctotomy is an incision into the rectum or anus to relieve narrowing of these passages, or to open a closed anus.
- A proctorrhaphy is a surgical procedure to stitch (repair) tears in the rectum or anus
