Rhinitis
Definition
The word rhinitis refers to inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose.
Causes
Rhinitis may be caused by:
- A virus infection (acute rhinitis)
- An allergic reaction (allergic rhinitis)
Effect (Symptoms)
In atrophic rhinitis the mucous membrane becomes thinned and fragile.
In perennial (or vasomotor) rhinitis there is overgrowth of, and increased secretion by, the membrane.
