About the county of Berkshire, England
The historic English county of Berkshire was recognised as The Royal County of Berkshire by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1957, due to the location of Windsor Castle (shown below).
There are some discrepancies between the precise area covered by the historic county (of which Abingdon, now in Oxfordshire, was the county town) and the present boundaries.
The main towns in Berkshire include Reading, Slough, Bracknell, Maidenhead, Windsor and Newbury. Collectively these are home to many well-known information technology companies. This general area forms a significant part of the 'Thames Valley' and 'M4 corridor' informally-defined regions that have been the location of much activity by various successful high-technology companies in the early C21st including up to the present time.
There are many places of historical interest including castles, stately homes, museums and religious (or formerly religious) buildings. There are also outdoor places of interest including parks and gardens, areas of outstanding natural beauty and other attractions such as Legoland Windsor. Popular sports include horse racing which takes place at Ascot Racecourse, football, rugby, hockey and ice-hockey in addition to many other leisure activities.
